I, James Thomas, is a writer of considerable range, dealing primarily in humour, with a taste for the baroque, the disorienting, the absurd, and the unexpected. I also teach, and when I get the chance, I compose electronic music.
Over the past few years, I have written and/or developed several projects in a wide range of styles and formats. These include: two novels; a book of verse; an original fairytale anthology; two short story collections; various picture books, wordless and otherwise; assorted humour projects; spec scripts; a stage play; and a comedy-horror for radio, in collaboration with Diet of Worms. I want to create in every conceivable medium.
As “AstonishingSod“ since 2008 (and roughly 40 other accounts), I’ve written comedy on Twitter—long, short, experimental, weird.
I created and wrote Twitter’s first (and only) show, CrimerShow, from 2013-14, and posted reruns in 2015-16, with extra content. It was about a city with one detective and one criminal.
My comedy podcast, Astonishingsodcast, ran throughout 2018. It feels a bit like radio comedy. I do all the voices.
Some of my work has been featured in the New Yorker’s Shouts and Murmurs section.
I also wrote and edited HUMUOR, a comedy zine in the style of George Meyer’s Army Man. As per the website, no print copies remain.
